Why Gundog breeds need more
Gundog breeds have been selectively bred for generations to hunt, retrieve, and work with high drive, persistence, and intensity. While these traits make them excellent working dogs, in pet homes they can lead to challenges such as:
-
Impulsivity and poor self-control
-
Difficulty regulating emotions and arousal
-
Becoming easily overstimulated
-
Low frustration tolerance and impatience
-
Struggling to switch off and relax
-
Finding lead walking difficult
-
Reduced connection and responsiveness outdoors
The stronger their natural working drive, the more skills are needed to help these dogs live safely, calmly, and fulfilled lives as pets.
Private 121 Training Packages
Where:
Sessions for outdoor skills will start at a secured field in Hurworth. Once foundations are in place, we can begin working in public environments to build reliability around distractions. There is limited availability for at-home sessions if you live within a 10-mile radius of the DL3 area and want to focus on indoor skills.
When:
Sessions are mid-week between, morning and early afternoons.
Sessions last 45–50 minutes.
What can we cover:
Puppy foundations, focus and connection outdoors, off-lead reliability and recall, lead walking and heelwork, leave it and impulse control, Gundog-appropriate activities for walks, managing hunting drive, building reliability around distractions, jumping up at people, over-arousal and poor emotional regulation, big feelings towards people or dogs.
Frequency:
Weekly or fortnightly sessions are ideal when first starting to establish foundations. As skills develop and reliability improves, session frequency can be reduced while continuing to build layers.

Frequently asked questions
Do you only work with Gundog breeds?
I work with all breeds, but high-energy, impulsive dogs with a love of hunting are my speciality. Every breed has genetic traits that influence behaviour. My expertise is supporting Gundog breeds in pet homes and the unique challenges that come with them.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals, your starting point, your dog’s challenges, and your commitment between sessions. We need enough time together for me to understand your dog and teach you the skills needed to reach your goals.
Do you work with separation anxiety or aggression?
I don’t work with complex behavioural issues such as separation anxiety or aggression. For this type of support, please visit the ABTC or APBC websites to find a qualified behaviourist.
Should I choose private or group training?
Group training is ideal for young dogs with no specific struggles who are happy to follow a set curriculum and are available on Saturdays. Private training is best if your dog struggles around other dogs or people, finds restraint difficult, or needs a more tailored and flexible approach. It’s also ideal if you’re available mid-week rather than weekends.
